Was laid down at the Portsmouth Navy Yard in Kittery, Maine in 1854 and was constructed with some of the salvaged timber from the third USS Franklin. That was constructed in 1815 and ultimately broken-up in 1852. Even back in the day, recycling was a popular method to conserve materials for ship building. It is on that same day our story begins; the USS Franklin.
